June 2010 President’s Message
 So June is here already, school is winding up, as are a number of other activities that take a hiatus for the summer. The Chamber is one of those organizations that does do fewer things in the summer, however we are still staffed in our office, and still have a couple of events coming up in June, and others already in the works for the fall. The annual Chamber “Just for Fun” 9-hole golf tournament is June 9th this year at River’s Edge Golf Course. It will be happening as this paper is being delivered to you! Hopefully you made it golfing and didn’t miss out this year. We again expect a full slate of golfers, as well as additional guests for the steak dinner and prizes afterwards. June 19th marks our annual Okotoks Parade. The theme this year is “Volunteers You Rock, a Rockin’ Parade”. Things get rolling early with a pancake break-fast hosted by the Okotoks Lions Club at 8am in the Yianni’s parking lot. The parade kicks off at 11am, starting from North Railway Street, proceeding through the down-town district to Northridge Drive and onto Riverside Drive, finishing by the library. It is followed by the Youth Festival at Ethel Tucker Park and the Big Rock Block Party along McRae Street from 1-3pm. There is a lot to do for the whole family, come out and enjoy yourselves! A new event for Okotoks this year is the Foothills Highland Games on August 28th. Com-petitions such as dancing, piping, drumming and the popular heavy games will draw competition from across western Canada and the United States. As John Barlow says, you do not need to be Scottish to enjoy the Highland Games as there is something for everyone, whether it be noshing on a wee meat pie, dancing to the music or watch-ing a heavy games athlete toss a caber the size of a telephone pole! Sounds like a must-see event to me! Our next luncheon is booked for September 15, the third Wednesday as always, at D’Arcy Ranch Golf Course. Our guest speaker is Michele Luit. She is from the University of Calgary Continuing Education, and she will be speaking on The Care and Feeding of your Team. Some of her ideas for discussion are what constitutes “team”, and whether management is solely accountable for making things right. This truly sounds like a topic we can all relate to in some form, and could come away with some insight into really making that effort with our staff members to work cohesively. Hope to see you all there. It’s not too early to be think-ing about our annual Service Excellence Awards on October 20th at the Foothills Centennial Centre. Our committee members are meeting this summer to get things rolling on this fantastic evening of recognition for ser-vice excellence from our lo-cal community. Please start to think about whom you may have received great ser-vice from that deserves nomination, and the forms will be around in September to show your appreciation. We will see everyone again in September, and until then, have a great summer and travel safely.
